Springfield School District's psychologists play a critical role in the identification of and response to students with special needs. Utilizing their expertise in the area of assessment, school psychologists are able to assist in the identification of students needing specialized instruction and to provide information that aides in the design of appropriate academic and behavioral interventions.

As part of the ongoing response to a student's special needs school psychologists provide consultation to both parents and teachers. Such consultation varies considerably according to a student's needs and may involve activities such as the modification of an individual academic or behavior plan or monitoring student progress, either academic or behavioral.

School psychologists also provide direct services to students and their families through the provisions of counseling, parenting skills, social skills training, and a variety of other direct service interventions.

Finally, school psychologists provide a critical link between schools, families, and the community by helping school and families access social services that are available in the community assuring the broadest possible response to a student's needs
