6th Grade Curriculum

Social Studies

  • Includes study of the ancient civilizations from the Stone Age through the Fall of Rome.

Language Arts

  • Includes composition, speaking and listening. Emphasis is on sentence structure, paragraph writing and language mechanics. Spelling is a component of the language arts program. Instruction centers around word lists, organized by phonetic and structural characteristics.

Math

  • The course reviews whole number operations with an emphasis on multiplication and division. Division of decimals is introduced in addition to work with the other decimal operations. Fractions involve working with mixed numbers. Beginning algebraic notation, statistics and probability are also covered.

Science

  • The course includes one quarter of health and three quarters of physical science. Topic areas deal with the scientific method, matter, chemistry, electricity, force, motion, energy, and the universe.

Reading

  • Designed to further develop the reading skills of sixth graders. Readings include selections from classical and contemporary youth literature found in the sixth grade.

P.E.

  • Conditioning and basic skill will be introduced through a variety of individual and team activities. Conditioning is stressed to help the student achieve increased physical fitness.

Health

  • Taught as part of science, health includes the study of safe living behaviors, accident prevention, prevention of communicable diseases, substance abuse and environmental health. Also included is the study of healthy lifestyles, management of risk-taking behaviors, physical fitness and nutrition. Responsibility for personal health, risk management and life skills is emphasized throughout the course.

Survey

  • Art
    A variety of art activities will be explored in creating art projects. Opportunity is provided to become acquainted with concepts and possibilities for creative art.
  • Computers
    A survey course for 6th graders designed to introduce students through hands-on experiences to computer hardware, software and wordprocessing. Keyboarding skills and terminology are also included.
  • Industrial Education
    An introduction to the study of industry and technology. Students will participate in various "hands-on" activities using tools and equipment. Safety is stressed.
  • Home Economics
    Provides a basic overview of home economics. Included areas of study are nutritious snacks, beginning sewing, self awareness and building interpersonal relationships with others.

Electives

  • Orchestra
    A classes for violin, viola, cello and string bass students who have no previous playing experience or those who have some previous experience. Basic instruction in orchestra playing techniques and orchestra music is emphasized.
  • Band
    For 6th grade students who wish to learn to play a wind or percussion instrument. No previous knowledge of music is necessary.
