8th Grade Curriculum

8th Grade Bloc: Language Arts, Social Studies

    Lanugage Arts

    • Part of the eighth grade bloc classes. Continues the development of composition, spelling, listening and speaking. A literature strand is included within the program. Spelling is a component of the language arts program. Instruction is organized around special problems that commonly occur in spelling such as using homonyms correctly, spelling words of foreign origin and doubling or not doubling consonants.

    Social Studies

    • Part of the eighth grade bloc classes. The study of American history.

Math

  • Provides an introductory overview of algebra, geometry, statistics and problem solving through realistic applications. Scientific calculators, computers and reading comprehension skills are used throughout this course.

Science

  • An introductory course in earth science dealing with the topics of meteorology, atmosphere, oceanography and geology of the Earth.

P.E.

  • A continuation of skills learned in grade 7. Conditioning and development of basic skills will be introduced through a variety of individual and team activities. Conditioning will be stressed to help the student achieve increased physical fitness.

Health

  • Topics of study include stress management, fire safety, physical fitness, nutrition, communicable diseases, substance abuse and environmental health. Responsibility for personal health, risk management and life skills is emphasized throughout the course.

Electives (lasts 1 semester)

  • Art
    An expanded study of art concepts and processes using a variety of materials is a part of this course. Study emphasizes creative problem solving and learning to appreciate and respond to art in the world around us.
  • Computers
    Continue to introduce students through hands-on experiences to computer hardware, software and word processing. Keyboarding skills and terminology are also included during the first 9 weeks. Students then advance to spreadsheets, presentations, and basic picture and digital video editing.
  • Spanish
    This course builds on the principles taught in 6th and 7th grade. A continued introduction to Spanish--including vocabulary, games, songs and cultural insights.

  • Industrial Education
    Students learn about the use of computers, graphic communication, metal working, woodworking, plastics and transportation technology. Students may design and manufacture items related to these areas.

  • Orchestra
    A classes for violin, viola, cello and string bass students who have no previous playing experience or those who have some previous experience. Basic instruction in orchestra playing techniques and orchestra music is emphasized. Advanced orchestra is offered to students with more advanced abilities and experience.

  • Band
    For students who wish to learn to play a wind or percussion instrument. No previous knowledge of music is necessary. Advanced band and concert band are offered to students with more advanced abilities and experience.
  • Choir
    For students who wish to learn sing well. No previous knowledge of music is necessary. Advanced choirs are offered to students with more advanced abilities and experience.

  • Office Assistant
    Students assist the office staff in their daily clerical duties. Included may be such tasks as answering the telephone, communications with staff and assisting with attendance.
  • Academic Assistant
    Practical experience assisting the teaching staff with operations of their respective program areas.
  • Peer Tutor
    Learning to work with other studetns having learning difficulties. Peer tutors work in the resource center or in regular classroom situations. Special training and teacher supervision is provided.
  • Instructional Media Assistant
    Students assist in the daily operation of the library. Students use reference tools and audio visual equipment.
