Ridgeview Reading Initiative
Accomplishments to Date
In the fall of 2002, nearly a third of our kindergarten and first graders were struggling in learning to read. By the end of the school year, virtually all students were on track in their reading progress. This was achieved by:
- receiving funds to hire a half-time reading specialist
- raising funds to hire a half-time reading assistant
- beginning to monitor the progress of kids who were struggling in reading
- providing extra help to these students to enable them to succeed?
- conducting an after school reading program for first graders who needed extra help (This program, called School Plus, was funded by a federal grant given jointly to the school district and the Willamalane Park District for after school programs.)
- providing planning and training time for teachers to plan our supplemental reading programs and to use the reading data to improve the program
