Springfield High School 2000-2001 Profile

SHS is a comprehensive high school which provides a broad range of programs from Advanced Placement Courses, Technical Vocational Programs (Industrial Education & Business) as well as an exceptional Special Education Program.

SHS celebrates its cultural diversity. Martin Luther King Day is used as a Springboard for student activities focusing on the positive attributes of a diverse population. One of the newest clubs on campus is Collage. This is a multicultural club that brings students together to share and enjoy their diversity.

SHS has developed and implemented a very successful English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Students receive specialized help in ESL classes as well as support in the regular classroom. One full time teacher and two educational assistants staff this program.

This year SHS hired a full time community liaison. The person filling the position works to continue the communication between the Latino community and the school community.

SHS students work on numerous community service projects which include the annual Day of Caring, food drives, clothing drives, a tree of joy at Christmas time, as well as support for the Children's Miracle Network through the Ms. Miller and Mr. SHS Pageants. All of these activities are sponsored and facilitated by the many student organizations at SHS.

There are over 613 students taking advantage of our Drama and nationally acclaimed Music programs (Performing Arts). These students represent 45% of our total student population. Research has affirmed that students involved in the performing arts at SHS can be seen in the new multimillion dollar, state of the art, performing arts facilities completed in 1997.

SHS students have both athletic and club activities available to them throughout the year. Athletic teams had 686 students participation, while clubs had 568 students participating. There is some duplication in these numbers. Each student may participate in more than one activity. Studies have shown that participation in co-curricular activities is a single common trait among successful adults.
